THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT PALM OIL AND HOW TO KNOW WHEN IT GOES BAD.

Image
How long does palm oil last after opening? Fats  like palm oil will eventually go rancid once they’re opened, which means their shelf life starts shrinking once the seal is broken. Once you open palm oil, you should use it within 6 months to make sure it stays fresh. There was even a  study  on the topic of the shelf life of palm oil, which isn’t available for most other fats! The study found that opened palm oil stayed stable for four months without losing its nutritional value, which is consistent with the 6-month recommendation! Refrigerating palm oil is thought to improve its shelf life, but we couldn’t find any specific numbers on just how long it might prolong the shelf life after opening. (Keep in mind that palm oil and  palm kernel oil  are higher in saturated fat than most vegetable oils, so refrigerating it will cause it to harden even more than it is at room temperature.) Can you use palm oil after its expiration date? As long as there aren’t a...

HARDWOOD CHARCOAL

Image
Hardwood Charcoal WHAT IS CHARCOAL Before we can get into specifics of how each charcoal preforms, it's good to have a little knowledge of what this stuff is in the first place. Charcoal is made by burning wood in the absence of oxygen. Lump charcoal is the product of the process in its purest form—pieces of wood burned down to be chunks of charcoal. Briquettes, on the other hand, are kind of like the fast food of charcoal; they're cheap, reliable, can be found on almost every corner, but you really don't want to know what's in them. Unlike the pure lump charcoal, briquettes are manufactured wood by-products compressed with additives that help them light and burn consistently. COST The first question you'll be presented with in your charcoal choice is cost. At the store you'll likely see that briquettes will come in much less expensive, pound-for-pound, compared to lump. In Queens, NY (where I live), I can pick up two twenty-pound bags of Kingsford briquettes ...

Melon Seed (Egusi)

Image
Egusi 'Yoruba'(also known as   agusi ,   egwusi  ,   ohue ,   Ikpan ,   Ikon ,   agushi   or   mbíka ) is the name for the   protein -rich seeds of certain   cucurbitaceous   plants ( squash ,   melon ,   gourd ), which, after being dried and ground, are used as a major ingredient in   West African cuisine . [1] [2] Egusi seeds with shells Egusi melon seeds are large and white in appearance; sometimes they look brownish or off-white in color but the main egusi color is primarily white. [3] Scholars disagree whether the word is used more properly for the seeds of the  colocynth , those of a particular large-seeded variety of the  watermelon , or generically for those of  any  cucurbitaceous plant. [4]  Egusi seeds are in a class of their own and should never be mistaken for  pumpkin  or watermelon seeds. In particular the name "egusi" may refer to either or both plants (or...
